This FAQ sheet is designed to help parents and prospective players navigate the El Toro Boys Volleyball program. It addresses the most common questions regarding the season, commitment, and team structure.
What league does El Toro compete in?
El Toro High School is a member of the Sea View League (within the Coast View Athletic Association) in the CIF Southern Section. We compete against local rivals in the South Orange County area.
How many teams are in the program?
Depending on turnout and talent depth, we typically field three levels:
Varsity: The most competitive level, focusing on high-level strategy and performance.
Junior Varsity (JV): Prepares athletes for the transition to Varsity.
Frosh/Soph: Focuses on refining fundamentals for freshmen and sophomores.
When are tryouts held?
Tryouts typically occur in two phases. Incoming players often take place during our camp clinics held in the summer, with official try outs occurring in late January. Returning players will have try outs in December before winter break.
Do I need a physical to try out? Yes. All athletes must have a completed Athletic Clearance on file before participating in any camps, practices, or tryouts. This includes a sports physical performed by a licensed physician.
Download the Form: Get the official Athletic Clearance Form
Get a Physical: Take the form to a licensed physician. The form must be signed by the doctor to be valid.
Upload to Home Campus: Submit your completed and signed paperwork via Home Campus Link
Fundraiser Physicals: Check with your coach for upcoming dates! We frequently partner with a local physician who donates a percentage of the exam fees back to the Volleyball Program. The cost is typically $40-50.
Primary Care Physician: You are also welcome to visit your own doctor. Please ensure you bring a hard copy of the clearance form for them to sign.
Important: Athletes will not be allowed on the court until their status shows as "Cleared" in the system.
When do practices start?
Right after try outs. Our practice schedule begin after returning from winter break.
When is the official season?
Boys Volleyball is a Spring sport. The season generally runs from mid-February through April. If teams qualify for CIF Playoffs, the season can extend into early-May.
What is the weekly time commitment?
During the season, players should expect to be in the gym 5 to 6 days a week. This includes:
Daily practices (typically after school)
Matches (usually 2 days a week)
Occasional weekend tournaments (usually 2 tournaments) all levels will attend
Academics & Conduct
Is there a GPA requirement?
Yes. Per CIF and school district rules, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and be making satisfactory progress toward graduation. However, our program prides itself on a much higher "Team GPA" average and encourages academic excellence.
What is the "Charger Code"?
Every player is expected to represent El Toro with integrity, respect, and sportsmanship. We emphasize "Service Before Self," meaning team goals always come before individual statistics.
Are there fees to play?
While public schools cannot require "pay-to-play" fees, we rely heavily on voluntary donations and fundraising to cover the costs of uniforms, tournament entry fees, equipment, and coaching stipends.
How do I donate to the team?
Visit the El Toro Webstore and click on Boys Volleyball.
How can parents get involved?
The program is supported by a dedicated volunteer group of parents. Parents can help by volunteering to assist with parent communication, team meals, or helping to organize our annual banquet and senior night.
